Story Ally[al-ahy] An ally is someone that aligns with and supports a cause with another individual or group of people. A straight ally is an individual outside of the LGBTQIA+ community that supports their fight for equality and rights. People are willing to be brave allies to the LGBTQIA+ community. Yet even when they have the best intentions, they often fear using the wrong language when engaging in conversations surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community. This can result in people being more timid (fearful) when it comes to speaking up. Hindering their bravery. As an agency rooted in a culture of Brave that encourages self-expression and living one’s truth, David&Goliath (D&G) is showing its support of the LGBTQIA+ community and celebrating Pride Month by launching “For the Brave Who Want to Speak Up,” an inclusivity initiative covering gender identity, sexual orientation, LGBTQIA+ definitions and inclusive language. Starting June 25 through 27, experts from the LA’s LGBT Center and the Transgender Economic Empowerment Project (TEEP) will be on hand and available through an Instagram Story takeover to respond to questions and provide insight into what’s appropriate in social situations. And on June 27th, during D&G’s weekly Thirsty Thursdays’ happy hour, TEEP will be available for a live Q&A with the agency. “The bravest thing any person can do is stay true to who they are. It’s the fabric of our agency culture and we continue to inspire our employees, brands, friends and family to do the same,” said David Angelo, founder and chairman of David&Goliath. “Words and language matter and carry a lot of power. In our industry, we rely on words to move people and create impact. What you call someone has meaning. And as easy as language can validate and acknowledge a person’s identity, true self, it also has the power to dismiss it.” Angelo added, “Even though we are ‘allies’, and fully support the LGBTQIA+ community, we acknowledge that we too have a lot to learn from experts to dispel this language barrier and help us and other allies feel confident in speaking up on the community’s behalf – as well as how to properly communicate with them. Which is why we wanted to do our part in providing a safe space to ask those important questions.” As part of the effort, D&G created a shareable animated video inviting people to join and ask questions. “For the Brave Who Want to Speak Up” is part of a broader D&G initiative with LGBTQIA+ organizations from across the country to build a mobile friendly website that will serve as an ally’s guide to inclusive language and etiquette. The website is due to launch during Pride Month, June 2020.
