Point of View: Director, Adam Wells

von Joe Brooks

POV: Director

How would you describe what you do?
I'm a director of all types of moving image.
How did you get into this job?
I studied graphic design and was a broadcast designer before moving into Driecting for Sky. During this time I began freelance directing and establsihed a small production company.
What is most challenging about what you do?
It's all a challenge. That's why I enjoy it.
What is most rewarding?
Forging new relationships and reaffirming existing ones.
What’s a typical work week like?
There's no typical working week. Hence I never make it to the gym.
What needs to happen the most in order for a shoot to run smoothly?
Preparation. Preparation. Preparation.
Whats your best job/worst job?
My best work has generally been projects where the client / agency is confident enough to allow all those involved to crack on as they see fit. The worst jobs are when they aren't.
What advice would you offer someone considering a career as a Director?
There are many routes into directing, so don't feel the 'traditional' film school way is the only way. Project self confidence, be decisive, but don't be afraid to change your mind if you feel it will benefit your shot. And be nice. That's the most important advise.
If you had one project that you could post on AdForum to represent your work, what would it be?
PlayStation 4 : For the Players
Finally tell us something that most people don’t know about being a Director?
We all think we're frauds and are one job away from being found out.
