Philosophie Skateistan, the non-profit organization that runs skateboarding and arts-based programs for children living in at-risk societies, has today unveiled a new campaign ‘Play For Skateistan’, bringing the stories of children in high-conflict areas to the global gaming community. The unique gamer-focused fundraising project aims to raise awareness and donations for the Skateistan community – children who are impacted by global conflicts and crises in areas such as Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa. The NGO was founded in 2007 to provide safe spaces, positive role models and a sense of community to children living in high-conflict zones. However unsafe conditions in these areas have made it harder for Skateistan to operate, meaning they need new methods to access support and donations in order to keep providing programs and a safe place for children. For the first time, ‘Play For Skateistan’ brings the children of Skateistan somewhere the whole world can help and learn about their stories – the gaming world. Created by DDB Germany, Futura FTW and in collaboration with the online gaming community referred to as the “modding community” – who create and implement in-game modifications called “mods” – three playable gaming characters have been developed based on real Skateistan students and their backstories: Sara from Afghanistan, Natalia from South Africa and Arun from Cambodia.[see below for more information about their stories] The “mods” of these characters, along with unique skateboard deck designs portraying messages of empowerment, are available on playforskateistan.com, where gamers cannot only download to play with them, but also donate to support Skateistan. Gamers can use the mods on the popular game Skater XL, with mods for games such as Session and True Skate to follow, in addition to replicas of the children’s hometown skate parks which will be released in the next days. The aim of the campaign is to encourage the global skateboarding gaming community to play with the students’ characters in-game, meaning these students will be able to skate in reality thanks to the donations raised. On a larger scale the campaign hopes to foster a sense of community among at-risk children worldwide, welcoming those outside of Skateistan’s operating counties by making them feel represented and part of the global skateboarding community. In accordance with Skateistan’s Child Protection, all characters represent an amalgamate of likenesses and experiences, given by our students. The characters are a representation of kids from each community. Sara from Bamyan, Afghanistan: A child's life in Afghanistan is hard. Especially if you're a girl, like Sara. The war left her and thousands of children without safe spaces to learn or play sports. And even the few existing places, like football clubs or gyms, did not welcome girls. Skateistan’s Skate School in Bamyan was different. When Sara joined, she was suddenly able to learn and empower herself through skate and arts-based programs. She had found a safe space where she could grow and learn. At first, skateboarding seemed impossible. But with her friends’ support, she didn't give up. She improved constantly, learning that everybody - boy or girl, big or small - falls off a skateboard the same way. It’s about whether you get up and try again. This confidence and resilience on a board allowed her to build up these skills in her daily life, and today, as a skate instructor, she inspires other girls in her community to push their boundaries and dream big. Natalia from Johannesburg South Africa: Today, Natalia is a confident and fearless skater. But she was not always that way. What she saw outside made her feel insecure. In the streets of Johannesburg, she saw violence and crime. But one day, she also saw something that would change her life. She saw a group of boys skateboarding. And from that moment on she was hooked. She knew she wanted to skate, too. Sadly, she had no one to teach her and the streets were still not a safe space. One day, she convinced her parents to take her to a skatepark, but there were only boys there, jumping so high and skating so fast, that she couldn’t find the courage to step on her board. Then she found Skateistan’s school in Johannesburg - a place where she had the space and time to learn at her own pace, with other girls like her. But most importantly, she had instructors she could look up to. Slowly she built up her confidence, becoming a talented skateboarder with her own distinct style. Today she is a Skateistan instructor – teaching and inspiring other young girls to skate. Arun from Phnom Penh, Cambodia Like millions of kids all around the world, Arun couldn’t sit still. He struggled to focus and found school boring. It just wasn’t his thing and he began to fall behind. Skateboarding, on the other hand, was totally his thing. Ever since he first saw somebody ride past him on a board, it was one of the most exciting things he could think of. But, where to start? One day, he found out about Skateistan’s school in Phnom Penh. He started attending sessions to learn how to skate. There, he learned how to ride around, to drop-in, he did his first ollie. But he learned more than just tricks, he learned how to focus, to be persistent, to get up again after he failed. And, with the extra push of Skateistan’s education programs, he taught himself how to use a computer and speak English. He came to Skateistan for skateboarding, and stayed for the education and his newfound group of friends at the school. Today, Arun teaches local kids how to skate at the Cambodia school. He knows that they’re learning a lot more than just skateboarding though, they’re learning life lessons, just like he did.
