POV: Director

How would you describe what you do?
I'm a Director of commercials and music videos, based out of Brooklyn, New York.
How did you get into this job?
I started directing small promos for electronic artists when I was at University and it spiraled from there.
What is most challenging about what you do?
Being unrelenting in the search for quality is the hardest part of the job. You've always got to be pushing yourself to get better and better.
What is most rewarding?
Working with amazingly talented artists and craftspeople.
What’s a typical work week like?
There's a lot of pitching until a job books. Then "a typical work week" goes out the window.
What needs to happen the most in order for a shoot to run smoothly?
People need to feel empowered to bring what they have to offer to the project, whilst also understanding its clear conceptual framework.
Whats your best job/worst job?
I'd say my best job was shooting the "Hope Inside the Fire" Music video that won at Cannes - it was an incredible experience. I'm not sure what my worst job would be.
What advice would you offer someone considering a career as a Director?
Don't do it unless you can't do anything else.
If you had one project that you could post on AdForum to represent your work, what would it be?
Foreign Fields "Hope Inside the Fire" which I believe is on AdForum. It's somewhere in between documentary, poetry and art film.
Finally tell us something that most people don’t know about being a Director?
You don't have to have every single good idea. If you surround yourself with amazing people and are humble enough to let them shine, they will take your project to places it could never have been before.
