Titel | 16th Century Life Expectancy |
Brief | Misinformation is plaguing the trans community. A bleak statistic first arose back in 2015 when a report compiled by the ‘Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ found the average age of Black trans homicide victims in some parts of Latin America was between 30-35. Although a very real and shocking statistic, it has since been extrapolated, taken out of context, and shared thousands of times across social media - fuelling fear within the Black trans community around the world. If a 35-year life expectancy was to be believed it would put Black trans women on par with people living in the 16th Century.Introducing ‘16th Century Life Expectancy’ – a portrait series featuring 5 prominent members of the Black trans community, painstakingly retouched and reimagined in the style of 16th Century paintings. Shining a light on the issues, the series has exhibited in galleries across London and world-famous art house, Christie’s. |
