During the past years a new way to trade and store data called blockchain has shook the financial world. So when the world was busy talking about how blockchain technology could revolutionize monetary systems, we found it could help us with a far more important cause.Same-sex marriages are still illegal in the 87% of the world's countries. Since all marriages are registered by states, you can’t register a marriage if it’s not accepted by your country.Together with computer engineers, we developed a global marriage registry open for everyone, only this time the marriages are legitimised by the blockchain community and stored in zeroes and ones. The registry can be accessed through www.marriageunblocked.com and is a way for same-sex couples to cement their love forever. Once the marriage is uploaded on the blockchain, it can’t be changed or altered and is there eternally, out of reach of discriminatory states.The initiative gained massive attention, as the launch correlated with the 2018 Russia world cup and an ongoing conversation about discrimination and equal love. Over 200+ publications all over the world covered the story which resulted in hundreds of marriages already during the first week. The campaign ignited a conversation about how innovative use of technology can fight discrimination and empower humanity. |
